Because he doesn't have Newcastle's best interest at heart anymore, I think he came in with the intention of both making money and delivering the trophies and success that have eluded the club for so long but realised the second part was always going to be a thankless uphill struggle that would be very draining so decided to what was easier and drain the club and so atleast getting half the job done he set out to do.

8 years of complete anquish
The man has no idea about Newcastle only that he can make money from this club hecause the fans are too daft to drive him out.

50m from 110m TV money and 34+ m already in the club
represents a miser who knows nothing about pmayers tvat are badly needed, and the newly appointed inadequate Board and manager prove that
Newcastle is dead in the water

Before Ashley the debts were getting out of control and spending on players in both fees and wages who had only come for one last big payday was painful to see not as an Arsenal but as a football fan, watching Michael Owen get fit just in time for the England game but not be available for Newcastle on 100k a week I remember thinking how much better the club and its fans deserved from people who take extraordinary wages from them.
Ashley quite rightly put an end to that and I think wanted to both balance the books and build a team the club could both be proud of and genuinely afford to have, but once things became a them and us situation I think he thought do I need this and remembered what he did best and concentrated on making money for himself.
The situation Newcastle now finds its self in is not all down to Ashley at all he has played his part but so have many others along the way and the fans are a long long way from blameless and the only way it will ever change for the better is to become Newcastle united again.

Amazingly other clubs going through exactly the same turmoil and are flourishing and some being relegated and now bouncing back.

The some others along the way are in the past as it seems as can be seen with other clubs but always someone drags this argument up in favour of Ashley.

Make no mistake, when you are a muti BILLIONAIRE and do what Ashley has done to this club pretending to be its saviour you need hanging from the Tyne Bridge.

He is everything that is wrong with this club and yet some fans still fans pander and look the other way.

Was it Ashley who drove Allerdyce and Pardew away? Two managers whos carers never exactly suffered because of their Newcastle exit and both who've feared aa lot better without Newcastle than Newcastle have without them.
Where were you in the table when each left? But no absolutely nothing that's ever gone wrong in any way shape or form has ever had the slightest bit to do with the fans? If you really believe that then your as far away as ever?
