A Portuguese journo has tweeted that Jao Moutinho is coming to NUFC for €13m. This would be a coup if it came off but where would he play?

SpireToon

1.) 23 Jul 2015 18:09:57
Absolutely!

2.) 23 Jul 2015 18:19:03
But that Portuguese Journo doesn't exist. He'll probably play in Arsenal's midfield would be my guess.

3.) 23 Jul 2015 18:26:53
In midfield. That's where he plays

{Ed024's Note - Fair Point.}

4.) 24 Jul 2015 08:53:21
Thank god we aren't getting Messi as well then!

I see the rumours about Thauvin will not go away but TBH I'd rather have the young lad form Feynoord, Boetius. I think he is a better team player and will create and score more than Thauvin who allegedly has a dodgy attitude. When you consider Thauvin will cost about £12m and Boetius £2m its a no brainer and the "spare" £10m could be spent elsewhere.

SpireToon

1.) 23 Jul 2015 16:33:44
Totally agree that Jean-Paul Boetius would be a much better buy than Thauvin and for a fee of £2m. it's a no brainer. Check Boetius stats as they compare favourably with Thauvin's. We'd be buying another Perez. The guy works his socks off for the team and scores and creates goals to.

2.) 25 Jul 2015 09:36:14
let's not forget, he transferred to Lille then immediately to Marseille as he decided he did not like Lille as a city. If he struggles to settle in France then there's a good chance he'd struggle in Toon.

3.) 25 Jul 2015 09:37:53
PS. the young lad from Feyenoord would be great, especially at the price being quoted, but I feel we still need to purchase an experienced player or 2, not early 20's but mid 20's with a few hundred games under their belt.

ED's - Is Ferminio Old Trafford bound or is there any chance that the English club he is moving to will be Newcastle United?

SpireToon

{Ed007's Note - There's nothing from Newcastle I'm afraid mate. Firmino will move from Hoffenheim in the summer with talks already having happened with Manchester City and Inter. Whilst I understand that there was a reasonable level of confidence from all parties that a deal will go ahead with Manchester City, they remain in a difficult position with FFP and cannot necessarily move quickly in the case of Firmino. That position seems to have drifted with interest from elsewhere. Barcelona (who would delay a move until January), Arsenal, Manchester United, Dortmund, Zenit and Schalke are probably all still interested but none has any agreement at this time.
The player is keen on leaving Germany which is a relief to Hoffenheim - as he has a termination clause that is seen to be very low and can be activated by a German team. With the player's desire to move to England, Chelsea (who had dropped their previous interest) have been approached about the player again - and on more than one occasion in recent weeks. Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Shakhtar and Inter have dropped their previous interest. Everton, Dynamo Kiev and Liverpool looked at Firmino last season but did not declare any interest with his agent at the time - although Liverpool have looked again a few months ago, but a move to Merseyside seems unlikely. Roberto Firmino was previously subject of a rejected bid from Southampton.}

It is pretty obvious that SM sees Dummet as a Centre Back which is why he let Willo go and why we are chasing a left back.
Its a bit late now probably but I'd love to see us sign Kieran Gibbs.

Hopefully DOumbia will pass his medical and then it is just a case of seeing if they can get Bearahino, Remy or Gomis.

A positive window for a change but why did we not do this in the summer and then we would not be in the predicament we are in now?

If the report is true about Townsend turning down the Baggies as he wants to join us then we should jump at the chance. £14m is ridiculous though but if we could pay a loan fee of say £2-3m with that being deducted off the price to buy him in the summer then I think it would be a cracking deal.

Pleased to see Shelvey on his way for a medical, he would be a great signing and just what we need in the centre of the park. With the signing of Saivet it will be intriguing to see how SM sets up the midfield as I still think there is a role for Collback to play, and with their being less responsibility on his shoulders he could actually improve quickly.

Still need that elusive striker, and I would like Remy but not convinced about his injury record, or that of Austin so why not just get both and then there should be no problem!

As much as I rate Lacazette he is not what we need at the moment. With Taylor and Haidara coming back I think we have cover at the back and actually our problems for a change have been not taking our chances instead of shipping too many goals.
For the reported £22m that was accepted by Lyon, and unsurprisingly Lacazette rejected the move, we could get Austin and Townsend and pay a loan fee for Remy who are all proven EPL performers. Chuck in a bid of £5 to £8m for Shelvey and then not only do I think we will survivee but we will comfortably finish mid table.
Carr's recent record on signings is pretty poor, so why not do something revolutionary like let the actual Manager/ Coach of the team select who we buy?

SpireToon

1.) 07 Jan 2016 19:13:40
agree with everything you say Spire it would be money well spent.

2.) 07 Jan 2016 20:59:27
Surely there no point bidding for anyone if they have no interest in coming.

£50m spent on Mitovic, Mbemba, Thauvin, Wijnaldum, Toney.
Only Mbemba has done OK to a point.
Instead of which after last season we needed players who know the PL so we could hit the ground running.
I think Wijnaldum and Mitroc will come good but to expect all these foreign players to perform straight away was ridiculous. I was against the Thauvin signing from the start, we should have put faith in Aarons and used the money to get Austin to take the pressure of Mitrovic so he could settle in. Thauvin is yet another Carr failure, apart from Perex name me another player we have bought down to his recommendations that has worked since Cabaye?

That's rich from a goner whose supporters annually call for Wengers head despite him delivering CL football every season, having little money to spend until recently whilst playing the best football in the PL and winning the odd trophy. And NUFC fans get called unrealistic!! If we had what you have had since Wenger has been at your club we would all be a very happy bunch at SJP.

Keegan first time around and SBR only knocked us back to honour a contract which is the nature of the man.

However any argument you put forward for anything will always be dismissed at because of your statement that Dalglish was a top manager! How can you be taken seriously after that?

You miss the point Art, McLaren is a s good as we could have got under the circumstances.
Would I have preferred Klopp or Acelotti or De Boer, absolutely but the state of the club and its perception in football means they would not touch us and nor would any other manager better than McLaren.

With the state of the club at the end of last season, the way the owner runs it and the general way NUF is perceived in the media and more importantly in football then McLaren was about as good as we could have hoped to have got. Why do you think Viera would have been better, just because he was a great player? History is littered with great players who did not make successful managers, sadly my own hero Mr Shearer amongst them.
We should have put or faith in Aarons and spent the Thauvin money on Austin.

Buy Thauvin and sell Aarons is not a shame it would be a disgrace. If it takes very penny we have left to buy a quality CB, quality LB and a quality CDM then that is what should happen. e have enough flair and firepower in the squad but he defence is naff.

I agree. The problem is not that we want to buy players now it will be attracting them. We may get one or two but I suspect we will have to dig ourselves out with pretty much what we have and that is not a good thought.

The club spent less when Pards was in charge than now SM is, but in neither case was the manager allowed to buy the players he wanted. AP wanted Shelvey/Tomkins/ Jay Rod and got none all of whom have proven to become excellent players for the clubs who do have them. Everyone knows SM wanted Charlie Austin, did no get him because no one would pay £10m for Cisse (as if anyone would, idiotic in the extreme to expect it) to free up the cash/wages and as a result we are left with a demotivated Cisse, a heed the baal 21 year old unproven Serb and an injured Riviere, although I think he has more chance of scoring whilst injured than he does when he is available for selection.
All that said AP did not get the best out of talented players like HBA, Marveaux etc and we played a really poor brand of football under him. Is SM an improvement? Probably not but the best we could hope for the way the club is run and its reputation within football. The point to all this is that Pardew is an average manager at best, McLaren is an average manager at best, Charnley is a poor negotiator and Carr is living of the reputation of Cabaye because since then I can't think of another player he has brought in from extensive scouting that has worked. All this boils down to one thing, the man who owns the club. Having brought back Special K, he undermined him and then every manager since and one summer transfer window of average spending (yes £50m is average these days) does not fix 6 to 8 transfer windows of poor or no signings and selling or releasing our best players. Ashley is the root cause end of, and until our reputation in the game is restored the likes of Pardew or McLaren is best we can hope for in terms of a manager and as a result mediocrity or worse.

Everyone agrees, he has had two good seasons and one of those was in the Championship. If Terry is droppabable then surely Collo is.
Collo's performance all season has been woeful so why is he still playing and why is he still captain?

Agree, we do not need him now we have Mitrovic, I'd rather see us spend £15m on Bearahino to add more pace to the attack.

Disagree totally. We need to keep our best players now we are adding to squad to not just be competitive but to ensure we do not end up in a relegation fight again.

Sissoko, Tiote, Cisse, cabella, Taylor, Anita etc should all stay and then there is competition for places which will hopefully ensure better performances. For too long we have had guaranteed starters and the continuing poor seasons is the result.
